Little Hearts

Jacob - born 1999

Our son Jacob was born on January 25, 1999.  His congenital heart defects were not detected in utero.  Needless to say, discovering that Jacob was born with multiple heart defects came as quite a shock to our family.  After two other hospitals, an ambulance ride, and a helicopter ride, Jacob finally arrived at Children's Hospital of Boston.

We had never heard the terms Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Total Anomolous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR) or Coarctation of the Aorta before.  But those were the diagnoses Jacob was given just hours after his birth.  One 1/28/99, he underwent the first of 3 open heart surgeries.  This first surgery consisted of the Norwood procedure and repair of his TAPVR and COA.  Over the next two years, Jacob would undergo three heart catherizations and two more open heart surgeries.  All were successful.

It is truly a miracle that Jacob is a typical average boy.  Yes, he does have a special heart that must be closely monitored.  But on the outside, he looks and acts just like any other little boy his age.  He runs, plays, and enjoys life to the fullest.  We never imagined after his birth that he would become the little man he is today.
